Fitness Classes for Pregnant Women

Fitness classes offer numerous benefits for pregnant women who want to have a healthy pregnancy, and get their body shape back quickly after birth. Not only do fitness classes keep you strong and healthy during pregnancy, they offer a social outlet to meet other pregnant women. Fitness classes and wellness centres offer a wonderful sense of support and camaraderie.  It is a place for women to meet and share their experiences of pregnancy: the good and the not so good.

Fitness classes for pregnant women specialize in making sure both mom and baby are safe and remain strong and healthy. Light, low impact exercises will relieve tension and stress and get your body ready for the most important day of your life – childbirth! Exercise can help with fatigue and lower back pain, as well as keep you fit.

When you are able to socialize and interact with other pregnant women, you can keep your sense of humour about all the changes your body is going through (who's got the biggest haemorrhoids?)It's important for pregnant women to remain as active as possible, in order to have a stress-free childbirth experience – or at least minimize the stress as much as possible.

Exercise and fitness classes will also help prevent some of the complications of pregnancy – gestational diabetes, swollen hands and feet, and other conditions.

Fitness classes incorporate different types of exercise, not just low impact aerobics or stretching exercises. Yoga can be very beneficial in helping you deal with leg or back pain, and help you sleep peacefully at night. It will also help to ensure your flexibility and strength which will come in very handy during labour.

You should start fitness classes as soon as you know you are pregnant, and you get the ok from your doctor. Your local YMCA may offer low impact fitness classes, or special fitness classes for pregnant women. If you don't have a local YMCA, you can look for fitness or wellness centres in your local area by doing a search on the internet. Visit as many as you can and join the one that you feel most comfortable with. Many centres will let you try a couple of classes for free before requiring a commitment.

Your doctor may also be able to recommend a specific fitness class or wellness class that caters specifically to pregnant women.

An active and healthy pregnancy will ensure that you and your baby stay healthy and strong, both during pregnancy and beyond. You'll be able to get your body shape back much faster than if you'd sat on the couch eating for two for nine months!
